Call my bluff!
“To bluff” is considered to be a US poker-playing term, that originates from Dutch “bluffen” - “to boast” (pretty smart, huh?). So, we’ve found out bluffing is great – it makes the whole game more exciting, and can bring you a lot more money than hope for a strong hand.
However, before you even start trying, consider the following: there are some case when it’s appropriate, and some – when it will cost you all your dough. You can give it a try if: 1) you’ve earned yourself a tight table image without bluffing, which means other player are more likely to trust you 2) there is just one player besides you – the risk o your bluff being called is lower, and the stakes are not so high to do that 3) you are absolutely sure no other player is holding strong cards 4) you are in late position 5) the pot is comparatively small – what’s the point of using your talent?
Of course, there are situations when bluffing is highly undesirable, which are: 1) the pot is multi-way – over 3 players are in the hand 2) your “bluffing records” are not too good – you’ve been caught not long before 3) many draws are possible 4) you are playing with even less skilled player who are likely to call your bluff all the time 5) the pot is big and very appealing for everyone, therefore – the game is worth the candle.
So, as you are at the table – just remember to analyze the situation before deciding whether to bluff or not, as this will increase you chances of winning, or, at least, not losing everything.
